Every Saturday evening we set the vibe for the city of Milwaukee from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. We mix up the hottest sounds from the electronic dance music scene. In The Mix with DJ Kenny Perez prides itself on bringing to the forefront some of Milwaukee’s most talented DJs and producers as guests on the show.

2020 has been a year to forget, yes, but it’s also been a time of reflection and creativity. One thing that is undeniable during this moment in history is the art of expression through music. Whether it’s Avenue Beat’s “Lowkey Fk 2020” or Beyonce’s “Black Parade,” music is playing an integral part in getting us through the Summer days and nights. For my show, “In The Mix,” we’ve loudly spread our wings not only to continue to have new Milwaukee DJs hit our airwaves but to make room for the major talent across the globe.

In previous months we’ve had fine mixes from Ninja Tune’s Jayda G, who is celebrating the success of an amazing EP, “Both of Us/Are You Down.” Salt Cathedral, whom I’ve had the luxury of meeting and interviewing at the Los Dells Festival in the Summer of 2019. They’ve finally dropped their debut album, “Carisma.” And who can forget the legendary Jorge Jaramillo of the 2002 Billboard-charting duo Who Da Funk with a comeback mix that I will cherish for years to come.

We continued this musical journey on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2020, with the coolest DJ/producer/label owner in the game, Claude VonStroke of Dirtybird records. Claude and the Dirtybird crew are no strangers to the city of Milwaukee. They have played countless venues across Wisconsin and have rocked many crowds. I first got to experience Claude get down when he opened up for Disclosure in Madison. That’s still one of my favorite experiences at a music venue to date, besides my opening up for Diplo on the Summerfest grounds of course. It may or may not be a coincidence that both artists Claude and Disclosure released new projects on the same day, but was honored to have him as a guest. Below is the set from the man himself, along with my intro set and several others that have been my guests this past month. Enjoy and please share!

Premiered by Danny Howard on Beats 1, “Raggadagga” is a beast — a driving and relentless attention-grabber from the first note, with a vocal chant that puts you in the middle of a tribal gathering. Fun and quirky, totally unique, it captures the weird out there dance floor mayhem that has underpinned the Dirtybird sound since day one. If “Raggadagga” is the beast, then “How I Make You Feel” is the beauty — a warm and intimate deep house track filled with layers and emotions.

DJ Collin Oliver

According to Brooklyn Fire Records label owner and legendary DJ Tommie Sunshine, New York-based DJ/producer Collin Oliver has been described as “a musical threat from Long Island with a long and winding road ahead of him.” With support from his family, Collin began his journey at the young age of 12. I met Collin and his Manager (Father) Jay during an event Tommie Sunshine was headlining at Site1A. After my interview with Tommie and hanging out with the Olivers’ at a fun afterset, my discussion with Jay and Collin about music and production, gave me every indication that they were all the way in and prepared to take on the world together. Collin, now 16, is ready to break through with his latest single, “Help Me,” released on Brooklyn Fire Records. I am confident that the industry will start taking notice of this talented young man. It was my honor to host this wise beyond his years DJ on In The Mix.

DJ Brotha Z

DJ Brotha Z is an awesome young DJ out of the city of Milwaukee. I met Zech a couple of years ago during an outdoor Reagan High School function that invited new and returning students to join an after-school club. The program I managed was Reagans’ DJ Club. I found out that Zech was alumn from the DJ club and was also a recent Reagan High School graduate now attending college and UW-Parkside. At Parkside he DJs the Volleyball and Basketball games in addition to cool events on campus. The highlight of his career so far was when he got the chance to open up a packed house with a friend and fellow DJ, Mando at the Mirimar Theatre. I hope being on 88Nine was as fulfilling my homie. Thank you and please enjoy the mix.

Support from our community makes stories like the one you just read possible. Make a gift to support the team behind the programming you use and enjoy!

Six DJs bring much needed beats to In The Mix

The stay-at-home order, while keeping us all safe and healthy, is taking it’s toll on a lot of us in the music industry. On ‘In The Mix’ we decided to go to a four hour format on Saturdays to help DJs cope with the stress of not being able to play at a club or bar. DJs such as myself, despite the loss of gigs, still crave performing for an audience whether it’s 50 or 5,000 people. It’s why a lot of us are turning to live streaming and submitting mixes to mix shows during this unprecedented health crisis. My show is no exception to this rule. Most of the DJs who have performed on ‘In The Mix,’ in the previous weeks, have been first time guests. DJs Chan, Xovi, Goose, Chomper, John Stuart and Ronco dug deep to bring you a show that will get your blood flowing. So dance to the music, support them by following them on their social media and most importantly, stay safe.

In The Mix brings us diverse talent every Saturday

If the stay-at-home order has taught me anything, it’s taught me to love more and reach out to everyone and anyone that is like minded and loves music. I am having as much fun as I can setting up the these line-ups every week for our revamped four hour mix show. So much so, that I forgot to post last weeks episode to our website! Where do I begin? In the previous two weeks we’ve hosted six wonderful DJs from many different backgrounds, musical styles and diverse locations.

Let me start off with a mix I took much pride in performing. The set boasted new music from Elderbrook, Diplo, Wax Motif and a new song from Mark Knight, The Melodie Men & Laura Davie called ‘If It’s Love.’ Recently hundreds of fans and house music lovers took to social media and recorded themselves dancing and singing along with the track. It’s an awesome reminder of the power music has during such turbulent times in our world. #staysafe #stayhome

DJ Merow | Photo by Edo Landwehr

This was DJ Merow’s first time on In the Mix and she did not disappoint. I actually discovered Merow while watching the Mixmash Records Quarantine Livestream with Laidback Luke. All the opening acts on the bill had to enter a competition to get placed on the line-up, and she was one of the winners that got that chance. She is also a really good producer and just dropped a track called ‘Breathe‘ with Henri Victory. This young phenom rocked the 88Nine airwaves with some boomin’ tracks and hard hittin’ bass!

Moses | Photo by Kelsey Lawson

I love the homies, Moses and Tista! Their musical selection is like no other DJs in the city. They have the biggest spirit and come up with fun ideas for cool events in Milwaukee. They created Non Pop!, an event housed at Site1A and This Is It! (We all hope to be back after the stay-at-home is lifted). During the events you would find visuals by the amazing VJ Brye, special guest DJs, along side Lisza Battikha and other fine muralist and painters creating amazing art pieces throughout the evening. Oh, and we can’t forget that each night money is raised for a local non-profit. For now, you can catch them playing 5 p.m. shows Wednesdays on IG Live at Non Pop!

Nona AKA Phox is one of the most talented DJs to hit the club scene in city of Milwaukee’s in the past few years. In just a short amount of time she has honor playing venues and festivals all over the Midwest such as Minneapolis, Chicago and Madison to name a few. In this mix she brought the club to the airwaves and we hope to hear more of it soon.

Captain | Photo by Weekend Natives at Site1A

Captain is an awesome dude and just loves to play good music. I first saw John open a show at Site1A (for the life of me I can’t remember the headliner), but he starting the evening off at 9:30 p.m. In the industry that’s the time when your wait staff and bartenders are still setting up for customers. I was floored by the amount of passion and warmth Captain put forth during that time slot and any show for that matter. It’s actually a testament to how much he loves being a DJ. His actions behind the booth serve as model on how you get your night started.

DJ Purple

Tha Duke of House AKA DJ Purple is such a generous human. He lends his uplifting house sounds to Vocalo 91.1 FM, Chicago, here on 88Nine and abroad in the U.K. and Italy where he continues his higher education. Although Reginald is safe and comfortable back home in Chicago at the moment, he is eager to get back to Rome when things get better in our world. Enjoy all of our amazing mixes and stay safe.

Since In The Mix has gone to a four hour format, I’d like to take less time typing out my thoughts and give you an opportunity to have more listening time with these fabulous DJs. But first we danced to some really cool tracks from Vassy & ONEDUO, Elderbrook, Rufus Du Sol and more.

Alex Peace is a true mixmaster and producer from the city of Chicago. He is the co-owner of the famed record label called Tru Musica. On March 28, 2020 Alex dropped off an exclusive Latin, tribal, Afro-infused house mix for us at 88Nine Radio Milwaukee. Be sure to check out Trumusica.com for their latest #TruCast, amazing artists, and Tru merchandise.

Jonn Hawley | Photo by Weekend Natives at Site 1A

T Dizzle | Photo by Weekend Natives at Site 1A

Many people don’t know this, but T Dizzle is a Nurse by day and an amazing DJ by night. During this quarantine, she took the little time she had for music and created a liquid Drum N Bass mix. Dizzle, I love you for what you are doing right now, thank you! #staysafe #everydayhero

I’m going to keep this short and sweet! Last weekend In The Mix went from a two-hour format, to a four-hour format almost overnight. With most of our local DJs out of work completely or suffering income cuts because of the quarantine, we decided to open up our airwaves for additional programming. Our hope is that this may help relieve some anxiety and stress that many of us are facing. Since the format change, the response has been amazing! DJs from all over the city and Midwest are reaching out and excited to play for our audience. If you are a DJ wanting to submit a set, follow the submission guideline and happy mixing.

Saturday we had the amazing Annalog who came off her two-year hiatus from DJing completely, Riptide for the first time igniting the airwaves with some fresh house and bass, plus the veteran Luke Warm dropped a chill set that can be used for any relaxing occasion. We also unveiled a new show intro created by the homie Alex Peace of Tru Musica! Tune in this Saturday where we will be bringing more new music and mixes from special guests Alex Peace, Jonn Hawley and T Dizzle. So while you wait for Saturday evening, stream the mixes below, follow, share and spread the word.

Some of electronic’s biggest artists are coming together for 24-hour virtual concert

“In these unprecedented and trying times, the global electronic music scene — which is inherently reliant on close, personal connections with the music we love and those around us — is in dire straits. Gig cancellations have rocked scene to its very foundation, as artists, promoters, and so many others who work in live events watch as their livelihood disappears.” – Beatport Staff

Artists, DJs, and loyal fans of electronic music have been forced to stay home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, Beatport Live has planned a massive 24-hour streaming event called ReConnect. It will feature 24 artists performing live from their personal studios or living rooms. The event will be hosted on Twitch and broadcasting live on Facebook, YouTube, and Periscope.

They’ve teamed up with AFEM (Association For Electronic Music), all the TIPS collected on the Twitch live stream will be donated to charitable organizations that will help alleviate the financial burden the corona virus has imposed on the electronic music community. Further donations will be given directly to the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund, a WHO-led effort to respond to the pandemic and help send essential supplies and personal protective equipment to frontline health workers.

Streaming will begin Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. CST. Here are the scheduled DJs from A-Z for this event. *lineup subject to change

Words can’t really express how I am feeling right now. It pains me to hear that my fellow service industry folks have little to no creative spaces available right now. The ability to perform, dance, drink and socialize has been compromised by COVID-19 and we are not happy to say the least. This is how many of us make a living. We really appreciate those of our friends in the biz doing what they can to help one another. Imagine MKE, DJ Dex (local DJ) and Aaron Ohlsson and the Mirimar Theater team are just a few examples on how Milwaukee creatives and industry professionals are coming together during this time of need. In an attempt to bring some needed musical relief, ‘In The Mix’ will be extending our Saturday evenings from a two hour format, to a four hour dance party! This means more time for having fun in your living room amongst loved ones or roommates. It means you can hear your favorite local or global DJ playing new and exciting music for an extended period of time.

So I asked myself, “What we do and how do we to do this?” I literally talked with our PD and said in so many words, “In The Mix, four hours instead of two!! What do you think?….YES!” It was as simple as that. So I quickly reach out to my fellow DJ’s that want to continue playing music, want people to have fun (even during such a difficult time) and importantly be a part of a platform that will help people cope with social distancing. Think about how powerful music is. Now, add a bit of energy and house music! It will bring some much needed relief to your weekend.

Here is what I envision. People turning off their TVs at 10 p.m., instructing whatever device people use to play “88Nine Radio Milwaukee” or simply dialing us on the FM. It’s a time to inspire loved ones to dance and get away from the negative energy. So everyone, let the sounds of dance music take over! I can’t wait, but while you do, here is the archive of last weekend’s show from me and Koshka!

I’ve been a DJ for many years and have heard a good number of interviews with some of the greatest DJs of our time, so to be a part of this was pretty surreal. Tommie Sunshine is such a prominent figure in our dance community and culture, I didn’t want to mess this up. In all honestly I was quite nervous. I never know what to expect with someone that has such a musical catalog, TV Show and history in the dance scene. Little did I know that all that nervous energy was so unnecessary when sitting down with this cool dude! Tommie was probably one of the nicest humans that i’ve met so far. We sat down and conversed about early life in the rave scene, the love for Wisconsin, his label Brooklyn Fire Records, the future of our dance music scene and more. It was an honor to share the full two hours of my time with Tommie Sunshine for his #raverevival Mixtape. Below you will find the full interview for streaming or direct download, so please enjoy!

In The Mix explores the black roots of house music

640 427

Every Saturday evening we set the vibe for the city of Milwaukee from 10 p.m. to midnight. We mix up the hottest sounds from the electronic dance music scene. In The Mix with DJ Kenny Perez prides itself on bringing to the forefront some of Milwaukee’s most talented DJs and producers as guests on the show.

Today electronic dance music is seen as an entity dominated by a global community, but like rock ‘n’ roll, house music has humble beginnings. Hopefully this episode will help to answer any questions you may of had about the genre’s roots.

Feb. 1 marked the beginning of Black History Month, so for Saturday’s show I decided to pay my respect to some of the pioneers of house music. DJs Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy and others dropped deep ’70s and early ’80s R&B, disco, electronic and funk cuts at underground clubs they would DJ. Their digging and manipulating of music would inspire people to create a lot of the dance music that we hear today.

To be honest, the rest of it is history that I could never really tell you about, because I wasn’t there. I can tell you that house music and its influence on “me” has changed my life. There is a saying, “house is a feeling” and for me a that term absolutely defines what the dance music community is, was, and will absolutely continue to be. If you’re interested in the history of house music and its black LGBTQ+ origins, watch the links below before you listen to me and DJ Devast8’s throw down some classic tunes. Thank you and continue to celebrate black history beyond February.

The history between me and DJ Devast8 goes way back to around 1991-92. I was 16 years old and he was about, 14. David would always listen to mixes his friends and family would bring back to Milwaukee from the city of Chicago. The tapes would consist of DJs playing house music on the radio, specifically WBMX and B96. DJs Julian “Jumpin'” Perez, Bad Boy Bill, Tim “Spinnin'” Schommer and others would dominate the airwaves with hip house, acid house and freestyle. Hearing those mixes were ritual for us both and I can say that doing this episode for our listeners is something we don’t take for granted.
